Clean, architectural aesthetics to match impressive, new station precinct

Iberdrola Australia have designed and constructed this unique solar shading installation for Public Transport Victoria at Deer Park Station in Melbourne’s West.

The delivery of two fully integrated solar bus shelters, each being 75m and 65m long, was coordinated through the Western Program Alliance (WPA). WPA is helping deliver the ambitious level crossing removal program throughout greater Melbourne to alleviate congestion at 110 dangerous level crossings by 2030. The on-site solar was another step in achieving net zero goals in upgraded public infrastructure in Victoria.

Our usual solar shading installations are typically for council and shopping centre carparks, however, we were tasked with designing and installing the extra-long bus shelters for pedestrian use with solar PV as the roofing. This included all civil works, screening, and seating for a turn-key solution. Together, the two solar shelters generate 80,000 kWh of renewable energy, annually – all while keeping commuters out of the sun and rain.

The design and installation process was challenging at times with many stakeholders, but it demonstrated Iberdrola Australia's expertise in working with builders and other contractors on complex construction projects. The other works were to construct the new, state of the art Deer Park transport hub that includes a new rail bridge, elevated station and over 50,000 trees and shrubs thoughtfully planned to enhance the station’s surroundings.

The Iberdrola Australia design was chosen for its clean lines and aesthetics as well as for our reputation for well-engineered solar systems. The bus shelter is entirely constructed from solar panels featuring the SunPark™ water protection system. We installed a full guttering and water management system and vandal-resistant cladding underneath ensure longevity and durability.

"An area that was particularly outstanding was the responsiveness of the team and their cooperation with delivering the on-site works."
